Here is a piece of guitar history. A stunning example of the art and craftsmanship of John D'Angelico; a testament to why these guitars are simply legendary.
The beautiful instrument, with the sought after cutaway, features an arched spruce top dressed in a rich Tobacco Sunburst, and framed with classic multi-ply binding.
The original pickguard is timeless tortoise shell also bound in multi-ply. The distinctive straight f-holes puncuate the top, and the iconic gold stairstep tailpiece finishes this work of art.
This captivating top sits on sides and back of flamed maple. The figuring on the back is breathtaking, and perfectly displayed by the deep sunburst.
The voice of this guitar is full and vibrant, with a fully developed low end and articulate highs. This is thanks to the tonal combination of spruce on maple.
The Excel is acoustically loud and dynamic, allowing it to stand up in jazz bands with full instrumentation.
This guitar has a floating pickup, believed to be DeArmond, with volume and tone controls on the guard for when the ensemble requires the use of an amplifier.
The figured maple neck is capped with a bound ebony fingerboard adorned with pearl block inlays. Playing this Excel is exquisite, with fast action, and superbly comfortable feel.
The iconic oversized headstock is triple bound, with the traditional scroll-and-pediment ornament at the crown and D'Angelico script logo above the engraved "Excel" nameplate block. The stairstep truss rod cover is pearl, and the gold tuners are Grover Imperials.
The condition of this vintage 1951 D'Angelico Excel is very good overall - there are the typical finish hairlines and binding separation in two places as you can see in pics.
This auction includes the Ess & Ess hardshell case in pics.
Here is your chance to own a true historic instrument from one of the most revered builders ever to design a guitar.
