Welcome. You are Looking at a great piece. This is the 1987 Ibanez Japan 540P Electric Guitar. 25.5" scale length. 43mm nut width. 7 lbs 14 oz.
This is a very cool piece based on the rarity of the 540P with push/push tone pot alone.
In addition to that, we obtained this from the original owner, a collector we've known for over 20 years, and this 540P has a very cool backstory.
In 1987 Joe Satriani, before he was JOE SATRIANI the household name, did a show at a club on Long Island which was hosted by Focus II guitars.
At the end of the show, there was a guitar giveaway at the end of the show.
Ibanez was unable to get a 540P guitar to the venue in time for the giveaway, so Focus II gave away the one they had in the store.
(The guitar they gave away at that show was just recently sold on another platform).
The story goes, as an apology to Focus II for Ibanez not getting the guitar there in time, Satriani gave Focus II his personal touring 540P when he came off the road, which was purchased by our friend from Focus II.
That is this guitar.
As this is a one-owner (well civilian owner) piece, it makes it easy to identify differences between this guitar and others from the same period as the owner did not do any mods to the guitar.
Two of these differences are important:
The neck here is oil finished, or was raw wood and oiled from playing over the years, and doesn't appear to have had satin or gloss finish on it at any point in time.
The other thing is the 'JS' handwritten on the case.
Unfortunately Ibanez doesn't have records back this far, and Focus II is long gone, so it's been tough corroborating this story- although the original owner is not known for telling tall tales and was a big Satch fan, and its history was the main reason he purchased it from Focus II.
Outside of the story, this is a pure 1987 Ibanez monster.
The body is alder and is loaded with a trio of Ibanez USA pickups.
The humbucker is coil tapped by the push/push tone control.
The Edge bridge has the Ibanez Backstop installed enabling very stable tuning.
The neck here is bruuuutally thin- .65" 1st fret to .77" 12th fret depth with a flat C profile.
The oil finish provides a very fast feel.
This 540P is in good overall condition- there are the typical marks from age and use you expect on a 30 year old example.
The frets here are clean- set up with action of just over 3/32" at the 12th fret low E.
This is your chance to get your hands on a fantastic Ibanez Japan example, with a great backstory, for the price you want.
